News & Media

  • RESEARCH FINDINGS

Rather than inserting boring lists of papers (which can easily be found through web searches and our personal links), we prefer to periodically choose some recent scientific team outputs and highlight them, through photos, links and brief background stories. Have a browse below!

  • OUTREACH

We strive to make our work relevant to the broadest possible audience. Sometimes it’s a blogpost, sometimes a videoclip, and sometimes it’s engagement with newspapers, TV, radio, podcasts, and other forms of media. Keep an eye on this page!

  • TEAM NEWS

We try to keep everyone updated on what we’re up to, who is joining us, who’s heading for new adventures, as well as travel plans and reports, special events and occasions. We may also take the time to put out statements about things we hold dear and passionately care about. It might even get a bit emotional!

On the back of the recent paper led by Erika Neave, Methods in Ecology & Evolution asked us to contribute to a live workshop that would tell the story of how the DNA Divers initiative was born and how it is picking up momentum, prompting recreational and professional divers around the world to wear the metaprobe and contribute eDNA samples from the areas where they operate. We have been using molecular methods to characterise seafood biodiversity and reveal mislabelling in the markets for almost two decades. Species substitution studies have become mainstream, but the application of DNA markers to tracing the geographic population of origin of the fish we eat remains rare. Marine Cusa led one of the first market investigations of geographic traceability of fish fillets, with Atlantic cod as a case study. Making sustainable purchasing choices is a mighty task for the average seafood consumer (especially considering how unfamiliar most consumers are with the appearance of fish, as we reveal here!)
